Pfaffenheim

Domaine Pierre Frick, located in Pfaffenheim, Alsace, has been cultivating vines for twelve generations, with Jean-Pierre Frick currently at the helm. The estate spans 12 hectares across diverse terroirs, including Grand Cru sites like Steinert and Vorbourg. In 1970, Jean-Pierre’s parents transitioned to organic farming, and in 1981, the estate achieved Demeter biodynamic certification. Since 1988, the domaine has refrained from chaptalization, allowing the wines to express their natural character. The vineyard practices include careful plowing, the use of cow dung every fourth year as the sole fertilizer, and encouraging wild herbs to flourish, promoting biodiversity and soil health. Biodynamic preparations are applied according to lunar rhythms, enhancing the vines’ receptivity to their environment. This holistic approach fosters an atmosphere of life, harmony, and peacefulness throughout the domaine.
Jean-Pierre Frick’s winemaking philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the wines to develop their own lively, healthy, and authentic character. The estate produces around 30 cuvées, many of which are macerated, including Grand Cru selections, reducing residual sugar levels typically found in Alsatian wines. Approximately 90% of the wines are bottled without added sulfites, showcasing the purity of the fruit and terroir. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged on fine lees in large foudres, enhancing complexity and texture. Jean-Pierre’s commitment to time and patience in both vineyard and cellar results in wines that are expressive, balanced, and reflective of their origins. His work has been instrumental in establishing a natural wine movement in Alsace, influencing many contemporary producers. A visit to the domaine offers a profound experience, where wine serves as a gateway to stories and exchanges that enrich the understanding of biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking.
