Bordelais

Fronsac

Paul Barre is a pioneering figure in the world of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux, France. In 1974, he took over his great-grandfather’s estate, Château La Grave, in the Fronsac appellation. Dissatisfied with conventional organic practices, Paul transitioned to biodynamics in 1990, seeking greater freedom and a more holistic approach to winemaking. His mother, Maryse, also played a significant role in the family’s biodynamic legacy, having converted Château Pavie-Macquin in Saint-Émilion to biodynamics during the 1990s. Paul’s commitment to biodynamic principles led him to reduce his vineyard holdings from 15 to 7 hectares, allowing for more meticulous care and a focus on quality over quantity. Since 2013, the estate has embraced horse plowing, further aligning with biodynamic philosophies. Today, the estate is managed by Paul’s son Gabriel and his wife Édith, who continue to uphold and enhance the biodynamic legacy with passion and precision.
Under Gabriel and Édith, the estate produces wines that fully reflect the Fronsac terroir and the family’s biodynamic philosophy. The vineyards, situated on clay-limestone soils, are cultivated with minimal intervention, emphasizing hand harvesting and natural fermentation. Reds are structured, deep, and layered, with expressive notes of black cherry, cassis, dried violet, earthy forest floor, and subtle hints of tobacco and black tea. The wines are harmonious yet powerful, with a silky texture, fine tannins, and a persistent finish that reveals their minerality. La Fleur Cailleau 43, a rare cuvée from the estate, exemplifies intensity, precision, and purity, produced in extremely limited quantities and highly coveted by collectors. These wines are elegant, fresh, and vibrant, conveying both the character of the soil and the meticulous vineyard work. Each vintage is a testament to the natural expression of Fronsac and the family’s unwavering commitment to biodynamic principles, offering wines of remarkable authenticity and collector-worthy rarity.
