Michel Gahier

Jura

Montigny-lès-Arsures

Michel Gahier, a discreet yet exceptionally talented winemaker in Arbois, Jura, has been crafting remarkable wines since the 1980s. His family’s roots in the region stretch back to 1525, and Michel inherited six hectares of vineyards, beginning to produce wine under his own name in the 1990s. He cultivates Trousseau on deep-rooted vines in red marl soils with northern exposure, allowing slow, late ripening that builds complexity and elegance in the wines. From this extraordinary terroir, he produces superb cuvées that are unmatched in Arbois, showcasing the finesse, depth, and singular character of this indigenous Jura grape. Even when his neighbor, the legendary Trousseau grower Pufferney, offered him the chance to take over his vineyard upon retirement, Michel politely declined, preferring to focus on nurturing the quality and personality of his own six hectares. Every parcel is harvested and vinified individually, reflecting the unique expression of each vineyard site.
Over the past decade, the quality of Michel Gahier’s wines has risen dramatically, earning widespread acclaim and generating strong demand both locally and internationally. His reds, particularly the Trousseau from “Les Grands Vergers,” are celebrated for their intensity, minerality, and complex, savory profiles, and they evolve beautifully with age. In the cellar, he follows traditional methods, with a minimum of ten months in barrel and occasional bottle aging before release. His whites, primarily Chardonnay in both “ouillé” and “sous-voile” styles, are known for their purity and elegance. Beyond micro parcels of local grapes (Poulsard, Pinot Noir) and a confidential Vin Jaune (Savagnin), he also cultivates Melon à Queue Rouge, a local red-streaked mutation of Chardonnay. It is remarkable how Michel’s wines combine purity and intense concentration with vibrant freshness and elegance. Whether enjoyed immediately or cellared for years, each bottle promises a deeply rewarding experience that is well worth the wait.
