Jean-Pierre Robinot

Loire

Chahaignes

Jean-Pierre Robinot is an iconic Loire winemaker, a figure capable of making you rediscover both grape varieties and wine regions. Born and raised in Chahaignes, in the north of the Loire, he fell in love with wine from an early age, eventually moving to Paris where he co-founded “L’Ange Vin,” the city’s first natural wine bar, and later, with Michel Bettane, the influential magazine Le Rouge et le Blanc, a veritable bible for natural wine enthusiasts in France. After twelve years running the bar and magazine, Jean-Pierre realized that to truly understand natural wine, he needed to make it himself. In 2000 he began producing wine while commuting between Paris and the Loire, giving rise to his first creation, “Cuvée TGV,” named after the high-speed train. By 2001, he moved his family back to Chahaignes, settling on vineyards near the house, and today he operates over 10 hectares across Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir, with several parcels planted with century-old Chenin Blanc and Pineau d’Aunis, two fragile but historically significant indigenous varieties.
Jean-Pierre’s winery is famous for its troglodyte cellars, seven limestone caves dug into the hills surrounding the estate. Each cellar has a specific purpose: vinification, storage of tools, aging bottles of pétillant naturel, and barrels of precious wine. Visiting the cellars is an experience in itself, with entrances secured by antique gates and old keys, evoking a cartoonish charm that mirrors Jean-Pierre’s facetious personality. The caves, dug between the 15th and 17th centuries, maintain a constant cool temperature of around 12°C, allowing slow, controlled fermentations and delayed malolactic activity up to eight months later. The succession of cellars, humidity, darkness, and barrels in varying stages of aging creates a unique microenvironment. This heritage of limestone caves has a profound impact on the typicity of Robinot’s wines, enhancing minerality, texture, and aromatic precision while supporting long, patient aging that contributes to their renown. To visitors, the cellars may appear chaotic, but Jean-Pierre masterfully controls this complexity, overseeing every barrel and bottle. It is here, in this distinctive subterranean environment, that his wines develop their character and achieve the finesse for which they are celebrated.
