Les Sabots d’Hélène

Alban Michel

Alban Michel

Languedoc

Feuilla

Alban Michel, originally from Alsace, ventured to southern France in the early 2000s, drawn by the allure of Corbières’ old vines, mild climate, and affordable land. In 2005, alongside his partner Hélène, he founded Les Sabots d’Hélène in the village of Feuilla, near Fitou. The estate spans 4.5 hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards, featuring Carignan and Grenache vines aged between 50 and 100 years, and Syrah vines around 30 years old. Carignan, the backbone of Corbières reds, is prized for its deep color, high acidity, and robust tannins, contributing structure and longevity to the wines. Alban’s approach to winemaking is deeply influenced by his punk ethos and anarchist ideals, which are evident in the unconventional naming of his wines as “vin de table (with 4 chairs)” to maintain full freedom and independence from AOC regulations.
Before establishing his winery, Alban was immersed in the vibrant bar scene of Perpignan, where he owned and operated several establishments that became hubs for the local punk community. These venues were known for their raw, unfiltered atmosphere, much like Alban’s winemaking style. His anarchist spirit extends to the design of his cellar, which is adorned with punk-inspired decorations, reflecting his rebellious nature and commitment to authenticity. Alban’s wines, such as L’Alternapif, Ni Dieu Ni Maître Ni Sulfite, and Anticonstitutionnellement, are celebrated for their bold flavors, minimal intervention, and respect for the terroir. The venerable Carignan vines impart depth, earthy complexity, and a unique expression of Corbières, making each cuvée a rare glimpse into the character of the region.
