Les Pieds Sur Terre

Valentin Morel

Valentin Morel

Jura

Poligny

Valentin Morel took over his family’s estate in Poligny in 2014, inheriting a legacy rooted in the Jura region’s winemaking traditions. His grandfather, after retiring from a sawmill business, planted 10 hectares of vineyards with his son Jean-Luc in 1978. Initially selling grapes to the local co-op, they began bottling their own wines in 1985. Jean-Luc, influenced by the local “Confédération Paysanne,” ceased using herbicides in 1999 and began ploughing the vineyards, laying the groundwork for the estate’s transition to biodynamic practices. Valentin, a trained lawyer, shifted his path after studying winemaking in Alsace, where he was inspired by natural winemakers like Pierre Frick and Bruno Schueller. He returned to Poligny and officially took over the estate, renaming it Les Pieds sur Terre, which translates to “Feet on Earth,” reflecting his grounded philosophy and a nod to a French radio program where guests speak freely.
Under Valentin’s stewardship, Les Pieds sur Terre fully embraced organic and biodynamic farming, guided by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka. The estate spans approximately 6 hectares, cultivating traditional Jura grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Trousseau, and Poulsard, alongside newer hybrid varieties resistant to disease. Valentin employs minimal intervention in winemaking, allowing each vineyard site to express itself authentically. Over the past decade, the quality of his wines has risen dramatically, earning widespread recognition among sommeliers, collectors, and wine enthusiasts, and driving growing demand both locally and internationally. The name “Les Pieds sur Terre” also signifies a state of mind, emphasizing a grounded approach to viticulture and winemaking. In recent years, he has gained attention in national wine media for his innovative approach and natural wines, actively supported local agricultural initiatives, and published Un Autre Vin (translated as “Another Wine”), sharing his philosophy and practical insights on biodynamic viticulture to inspire fellow growers and wine enthusiasts.
