Catherine Dumora

Auvergne

Bansat

Auvergne is an incredible region full of secrets waiting to be discovered, populated by unclassifiable winemakers, among whom Catherine Dumora of L’Égrappille is one of the most distinctive. Originally from Arcachon, she moved to Auvergne after discovering natural wine and, from 2013, shared her life and work with Manuel Duveau, then under the label Yahou Fatal. Though each kept their own domaine name, the couple harvested, vinified and aged wines together, before releasing them under their respective labels. This lasted until their separation in 2018, when Catherine moved south of Issoire. There she continues her quest to revive forgotten parcels, but now also rents, buys and plants vineyards of her own. The rugged hillsides around Lamontgie and Bansat, overlooking the Bansat river, are marked by biodiversity and soils of deep clay loam with gneiss, quartz, limestone and volcanic basalt. At the heart of her work lies Vieux Gamay d’Auvergne, an old local strain of Gamay, with parcels reaching 80–100 years of age, alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and hybrids in certain sites. Her project is both a human and cultural one: restoring viticultural heritage where farming once thrived.
From the very beginning, L’Égrappille was conceived as a way to give voice to forgotten vines, rescuing abandoned parcels and transforming them into ephemeral works of art. Before her installation in 2018, every cuvée was a one-off, an unrepeatable dialogue between vine and vintage, a fleeting expression of time and place. Catherine listens to her vines like others might listen to music: treatments are sparing and intuitive, guided by observation, patience and the cycles of life in the vineyard. In the cellar, she refuses to impose her hand; fermentations are spontaneous, vessels are neutral, and the wines unfold at their own rhythm. Among her most emblematic creations was “Explosive Materials,” a sparkling Vieux Gamay d’Auvergne whose form shifted each year, sometimes rosé, sometimes red, sometimes drier or sweeter, yet always charged with brilliance and energy. This charismatic and confidential wine was one of the cuvées that first brought L’Égrappille to international recognition. Since 2018, her wines appear under the label MO(S)O, carrying the same restless spirit. Each bottle is a rare gem, born from a single barrel or single jar, making her production as confidential as it is captivating.
