Domaine de la Sénèchalière

Marc Pesnot

Marc Pesnot

Loire

Saint-Julien-de-Concelles

Marc Pesnot farms 20 hectares of old vines near Nantes at Domaine de la Sénéchalière, mostly Melon de Bourgogne with a small parcel of Folle Blanche, a property renowned for its commitment to traditional and organic viticulture. From the beginning of his career, Marc sought to elevate the quality of Muscadet beyond the region’s industrial reputation. He experimented with extended skin contact, natural fermentation techniques, and low-intervention winemaking to understand the true potential of his vines. Over time, he realized that the Melon grape itself was noble; the apparent shortcomings lay in the conventional industrial practices surrounding him. Today, Domaine de la Sénéchalière produces wines that reflect purity, precision, and the essence of its terroir. The estate’s schist soils, coupled with excellent southern exposure, provide structure, depth, and minerality rarely found in Muscadet. Marc works entirely organically, ensuring healthy vines and balanced grapes, while manual harvesting and meticulous sorting allow malolactic fermentation without added sulfites.
The wines of Domaine de la Sénéchalière are released under the Vin de France designation to allow for the natural malolactic fermentation that the AOC rules would otherwise prohibit, resulting in more approachable and harmonious wines. These wines develop layers of complexity and a refined minerality that enhances their versatility at the table. Marc’s meticulous care in the vineyard and cellar produces wines that are aromatic, lively, and precise, with a subtle richness and textural elegance. Domaine de la Sénéchalière has gained recognition among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts, who appreciate its refusal to compromise on quality. The wines pair beautifully with seafood, shellfish, poultry, and creamy dishes, offering a balance of freshness, tension, and depth. In every vintage, the estate expresses the unique identity of its terroir, the resilience of its old vines, and Marc Pesnot’s dedication to creating Muscadet of true distinction. The 2025 vintage marks the final harvest led by Marc and his wife Béatrice at the estate. Ryosuke Furuya, a former Japanese chef who joined the domaine in 2020, and Robin, recently added to the winemaking team, are taking over the reins, with Marc guiding them to transmit his heritage before a well-deserved retirement.
