Château Tour Grise

Philippe & Françoise Gourdon

Philippe & Françoise Gourdon

Loire

Puy-Notre-Dame

In 1990, Philippe Gourdon broke from the family domaine of Beauregard to create Château Tour Grise. What began with 20 hectares was streamlined to about 8, as he and partner Françoise leased out over half the original holdings to devote greater care to the most expressive parcels. The estate centers around an elegant 15th-century Loire mansion, overlooking vineyards of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc planted biodynamically since 1998. Between the rows, ground cover thrives; the soil is hoed beneath each vine, shoots are pruned gently, trimming is minimal, and early disbudding is practiced carefully — all to coax ripeness naturally. Philippe’s winemaking emphasizes restraint: soft vinification, no added yeasts, no chaptalization, and only light sulphur when essential. The long cellars, carved into Loire limestone, provide a cool, stable environment ideal for aging, particularly for sparkling cuvées.
When Philippe retired in 2014, he entrusted the estate to a new generation who share his biodynamic ethos, ensuring his legacy endures. The four young growers now cultivating Tour Grise’s parcels are Emmanuel Haget, David Foubert (Domaine Folle Berthe), Mélanie Hunin from Paris, and Aymeric Hillaire (Domaine Mélaric, L’Austral, Saumur). Among the vineyards, the Puy Notre-Dame plots stand out, with gentle slopes and well-draining siliceous soils that lend finesse, aromatic intensity, and elegance to the wines. These vignerons continue Château Tour Grise’s tradition of natural viticulture, crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines that honor Philippe Gourdon’s philosophy of minimal intervention. Today, Tour Grise stands as an emblem of Loire winemaking, where patience, purity, and a sense of place define every bottle, inviting those who seek wines that speak softly but profoundly of their origins.
