Alexandre Bain

Loire

Tracy-sur-Loire

Alexandre Bain is a wonderful yet rare specimen in the world of wine. He was not born in Pouilly-Fumé, nor into a family of winemakers. His father was not a vigneron, but his grandfather had purchased a few plots in Tracy-sur-Loire as a rental investment. In 2007 Alexandre developed a curiosity for viticulture and persuaded him to let him work the vines. From this spark, he built an estate that now spans 11 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, the grape of Pouilly-Fumé, or Pouilly-rumé in local dialect. Gradually he purchased parcels from neighboring growers who were scaling down, piecing together vineyards of two distinct soils: the stony, well-drained Portland limestone (135 million years) producing cuvées such as Pierre Précieuse and Terre d’Obus, and the heavier Kimmeridgian limestone (140 million years), once the bed of the Loire, which gives structure to wines like Mademoiselle M.. To this terroir Alexandre applies biodynamic farming, training his vines low to retain acidity, working his narrow rows by hand, and ploughing with his draft horse Phénomène instead of a tractor.
In the cellar nothing is technological or oenological. He relies only on indigenous yeasts, adds no enzymes, and does not fine the wines, with at most a whisper of sulfur at bottling. Alexandre also chooses to harvest later than most of his neighbors, often two weeks later, which imparts to his wines a distinctive golden hue and fuller ripeness. The result is a range of Sauvignon Blancs that display astonishing precision and vitality, each cuvée carrying its own identity, some intensely mineral and citrus-driven, others broader, more oxidative, or textural. His vineyards stand as a model of health and biodiversity, a testament to his philosophy of working with, not against, nature. In 2015 the appellation refused to classify his wines as Pouilly-Fumé, relegating them to Vin de France, yet his reputation only grew. Today Alexandre Bain is recognized as one of the most precise vignerons in the Central Loire, a true reference point for Sauvignon Blanc, with his wines gracing the lists of France’s and the world’s three-star restaurants. Expressive and free, they are living wines, vibrant reflections of place and of an uncompromising vigneron.
